Must Do: Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka

Hikkaduwa is a small beach town located along the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is a popular tourist destination for anything and everything that involves the beach. Hikkaduwa used to be known as the beach hub of Sri Lanka, however, after it was devastated by the 2004 tsunami other beach locations have begun to rise in popularity. Today much of the city has been rebuilt and only an observant eye could pick that this vibrant beach town was hit with such a devastating natural disaster.

Hikkaduwa is a great place to visit for a few days- it has a great atmosphere, fresh seafood is on the menu every night and there are good waves swimming or surfing. If you are pushed for time, I would suggest staying at Mirissa over Hikkaduwa as it is a lot more laid back and less commercialised, but overall if you have the time it’s worth the visit.  Ok let’s get into the doing.

Do absolutely nothing

This one is pretty straight forward, grab your towel and sunscreen and head to the beach to work on your tan and people watching skills. Hikkaduwa’s main beach is busting no matter what time of the day or night so head on down and enjoy. I will warn you though, spray yourself with insect repellent my poor legs and arms got smashed by very hungry midges!!!

Go for a surf

Pretty much all of the little restaurants offer surfboard hire. You can hire it for as little or as long as you like. Sam decided to rent one for a few days so he could sneak away in the early hours of the morning and catch some waves on sunrise. There seemed to be great waves most of the morning and then again in the late afternoon, so if you can surf or would like to learn Hikkaduwa is the place to be!!

Snorkel the coral triangle

Now we didn’t do this one as we had heard the coral has seen better days BUT it seemed to be a popular past time for many tourists. All the tourists that got out of the water had big smiles on their faces, so i guess its not all bad. The water can get a little rough some days so make sure you check that weather first.

Walk the beach and admire sunset

Hikkaduwa Beach stretches for miles. We decided to take a late afternoon walk and explore it. This was a great idea because you can check out all the restaurants on the way past and reward yourself with a nice cold drink and dinner once you are done. Hikkaduwa has a killer sunset, so perch up at one of the million restaurants and enjoy!!

Thinking of visiting Hikkaduwa or have you already been there? Let me know what you think of this post!!
